What Is Repointing?
Repointing — also called tuckpointing — is the process of removing deteriorated mortar from between the brick joints and replacing it with fresh mortar. Mortar is softer than brick by design, meaning it weathers and erodes before the brick does. When mortar erodes, water penetrates the joints, saturates the masonry, and causes progressive freeze-thaw damage. Repointing is a preventive and restorative repair that protects the brickwork and extends the life of your chimney by decades.
